LEAP FOR LIFE.
FIFTY GIRLS ESCAPE FIRE.
Spectacular Rutland Street Blaze Destroys a
Factory.
| FIERCE FLAMES SPREAD LIKE MAGIC.
Spreading with uncanny speed, fire destroyed the factory of the Plummer Hat Company in Rutland Street late yesterday afternoon. Fifty girls in the first storey had to escape by fireescape and windows; many of them jumped or fell to the pavement, and a number suffered sprains and abrasions. 1 O It was the most sensational fire seen in Auckland for many years. The cause is considered to be the blowing out of a fuse on the main switch, followed by a burst of yellow smoke that may have come from inflammable material used in the business. Plant, stock and building were valued at about £18,000, and the insurances totalled £13,000. The flames had such a hold that the fire brigade could not get at the seat. The fire started at four o'clock, and was not completely out until dark.
