SHORT OF COAL.
PENYBRYN'S MOVEMENTS.
WILL BUNKER AT SUVA. TOFUA RUNNING LATE. The Norwegian tramp steamer Penybryn, which was en route from Cuba to Auckland when she turned back to stand- by the Tahiti, is running short of coal, and is afraid to face the southwest gale through which she would have to pass to reach Auckland. She, therefore, intends to make for Suva to replenish her bunkers. The Union Co. had proposed to dispatch the Waipahi for Rarotonga to-morrow with orders to meet the Penybryn at the Kermadec Island and give her some coal. This plan has now been abandoned,- and the Waipahi is to sail on Thursday as formerly scheduled.
Meanwhile the Matson liner Ventura, with all the passengers and crew of the Tahiti aboard, expect? to arrive at Pago Pago (American Samoa) to-morrow. The Tofua, which wiw diverted to the rescue of the Tahiti after leaving Suva for Tonga on Thursday last, is now running three days behind her scheduled dates. She is to call at Pago Pago (probably after leaving Apia for Suva and Auckland) to pick up thepassengers and crew of the Tahiti, landed there by the Ventura.
The Tofua is now due back at Auckland on September 4.
