SEAMAN ATTEMPTS SUICIDE.

HUNDRED HEADACHE TABLETS IN BEER. ADMONISHED BY MAGISTRATE.(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. Admission that he had attempted to commit suicide by placing 100 headache tablets in his beer was made by a seaman, aged 33, in the Police Court yesterday afternoon. Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M.: One hundred! Sub-Inspector Lopdell said accused had had hard luck and had been drinking. He had come to New Zealand by the Manuka, which was wrecked, but fortunately he had not shipped with the Tahiti, as had been his intention. Aftei; taking the headache tablets ■ he was removed to hospital, where he remained three days. The Magistrate: Do the police consider he is in a fit condition to be released ? Sub-Inspect or Lopdell: Yes. There is a certificate to that effect. The Magistrate (to accused): Will you feel like this again? Accused: No, it was just a mad fit. I worked myself into a lit of depression with bad luck. It was not premeditated for long or anything like that. The Magistrate: It should never cause you ' that much trouble and distress. You should cheer up a bit. It is absolute folly. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on in six months, ,it being directed -that -he make- restitution to the hospital and take out a prohibition order against himself.

The Magistrate,: The probation officer you will find is a good friend to you. If you fall into a mood to commit suicide again go to him and he will save you from it. An' order for the suppression of accused's name was granted.
