MAORI VETERAN.

The death near Lake Waikare, Te Kauwhata, of Mr. William Awhi, aged 1)5, removed one of the last surviving Maoris who fought at Rangiriri 07 years ago. Mr. Awhi was taken prisoner by the Imperial troops at Rangiriri, and was brought to Auckland, where he was with others for some time confined on a hulk in the harbour. Captain G. Sticlibury, of Auckland, was in charge of the prisoner at one stage of the trip to Auckland. Later the prisoners on the hulk were removed to Kawau, from which island many managed to escape, and return quietly to their homes.

Mr. Awhi Lad Ivied at Te Kauwhata practically all Ms life, with the exception of a trip he made to Brisbane in a sailing vessel many years ago. He was buried iu the Maori Cemetery at Taupiri. ' ' .•
