ONEHUNGA ORPHANS' CLUB.

At a well ; attended meeting , of the Onehunga Orphans' Club on Saturday evening, Mr. E. V. Sutherland, who presided, delivered an interesting on New Zealandere who had won distinction in the fields of" science, learning, and sport. Referring to the achievements ot such natives of the Dominion at oir Ernest Rutherford. Matthew Hunter, Anthony Wilding, Sanders, Dave Gallaher and ■'his 1905 All Black team, Bob Fitzsimmons, McConachy ■ Grimmett, and George Price, Mr. Sutherland said that it was remarkable that with a .population of little more than a million,- eo inany of New Zealand's sons should have made world-wide reputations. He ascribed such a result very largely to the New Zealand Land Company and its chairman, Edward Gibbon Wakefield, who had made a strict scrutiny of the characters and antecedents of the early colonists who so successfully settled Wellington, Taranaki, Nelson, Canterbury, and Otago in the 'forties and 'fifties of last century.
