WELLINGTON'S STRONG TEAM.

WELLINGTON, this day

Wellington will have a strong team to defend tbe New Zealand cross-country championship on August 30. The selector, Mr. Nattraes, has announced, the following team: A.-.L. Stevens ?• . *H Francis, A. Barclay, C. McCarthy, L. Watson, and L. Sinclair. The emergencies are P. Silver and J. Shephard, The team is exceptionally strong, and is expected to retain the laurels. Stevens has won every open race in Wellington, and on Saturday had no trouble Hi winning the Wellington championship for the second time. Francis is at present domiciled in Gisborne, and is an English international runner of repute: Last year he established record t time' in tho Port Chalmers to JDunedin road race. Barclay is the veteran in ;local circles and was' the first Wellington man to finish in the last New Zealand championship. McCarthy is a second year runner and represented his province last year, filling thirteenth place. •L. Watson is making his first appearance in New Zealand championships. He; filled second place in the Wellington Club championship, but is improving fast, and was _ third in the provincial race. Sinclair "is a young runner with promise. He belongs to the Scottish Club, of which «lub Stevens is the champion. • The emergencies represented Wellington last season, but are not stiowing true form. They may run as individuals. If Rose does not start, and he has not been nominated by Wanganui-West Coast, the race should be between Stevens, Francis, and Barnes. The protest ■ over the disqualification of B grade runners last Saturday will be dealt with at a special meeting, on Tuesday. It is unlikely that the protest will be upheld.
