BLUFF TO MELBOURNE.
PROPOSAL TO DISCONTINUE SUBSIDY. SHIPPING SERVICE FUTURE. (Bj Telegraph.—Press Association.) TNVERCARGILL, Sunday. A recommendation to the Government to discontinue the-subsidy "for the South Island to Melbourne shipping service was approved unanimously at a meeting of the Southland execeutive of the Farmers' Union yesterday. The opinion was expressed that the value of the seiviee to New Zealand did not warrant the expenditure of public money Involved, more particularly at a time when stringent economy was necessary.
"It. is absurd to talk of renewing the subsidy," said Mr. W. J. A. McGregor, who introduced the matter. The Umcn Steam Ship Company had stated that notwithstanding the subsidy of £39,000 the service had shown a loss of £9800, but he could not understand how this •„«:;'c about.
