BIRKENHEAD EX-SERVICEMEN.
BRANCH ASSOCIATION FORMED,
•An ex-Servicemen's Association was formed at Birkenhead last evening l . Membership is open to all men ami women who were honourably discharged from any campaign. There was "an attendance of some 30 returned soldiers, and several apologies for unavoidable absence were received..Dr. J. W. Craven, who presided, said that after'the pre' limin&ry meeting he had received an invitation to attend a similar meeting at Northcote. He. had replied regretting inability to attend, and stating that he could not see that two organisations in such close proximity were desirable. It was considered at the initial meeting more advantageous that the one association should cover not only Northcote, but the districts right out to Albany. Alternate meetings could be held in each borough. The secretary, Mr. J. W. Canty, said information had been conveyed to him that a. separate organisation was to be formed at Northcote. On this understanding it was decided to proceed with the election of officers, and that the executive could take action accordingly if Northcote men were desirous of merging both bodies into one strong organisation. The objects of the association are to be of a social and benevolent charactei', and a' ' flag day" and social functions are to be arranged. The annual subscription was fixed at 2/6. Officers elected were:—President, Dr. J. W. Craven; vice-presidents, Messrs! J. C. Yeomans. G. B. Gunnery, G. R. Hutchinson, and C. G. Ashdownej committee, Messrs. F. C. Tothill. C. Couch; W. Moon,, S. W. Carter, M. Canary, A.! B. Hopkins, E. J. Spencer and J. E; Goulden; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. W. Canty; assistant secretary, Mr, T.j Dale; auditor, Mr. A. E. Greenslade. J
