STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.
Charmeuse, who is engaged in hack races at the Grand National meeting, has been racing well during the past month. She finished second to Desert Song in the Flying Handicap at the Christchurch Hunt meeting, and on that showing she should be worth following at Riccarton next week. Leasehold, the Acre three-year-old "in J. Cliisholm's stable, is not being hurried in his preparation and is still big in condition. When this gelding returns to proper racing trim he should do well"in hack company. Grattus, wlio is included in the team taken to Piccarton by the Hawke's Bay trainer W. McKinnon, is on the private sale list, delivery to be given after the Grand National meeting. As a three-year-old last season the Lord Quex gelding won three races, and as he is entered for several minor events at Riccarton there is every prospect of him reaching the winning list during that meeting. At Trentliam last month Jen finished second to Matu in the July Steeplechase, and on that form the Hawke's Bay-owned gelding will have to be considered the next time lie goes, to the post. Jen figures in the Enfield Steeplechase, to be run at Riccarton next Tuesday, and is also engaged in the Grand National (Hurdles anrl Sydenham Hurdles, to be decided at the same meeting. Portray, who is engaged in the Avonhead Handicap at Riccarton next week, raced consistently last season, registering three wins and five second placings during the season. He was in good form at the Wellington winter meeting last month, where he ran second to Coon Song in the Woburn Handicap, six furlongs, on the first day, and annexed the Petone Handicap, run over a similar distance, on the second day. Portray is a half-brother to Teri, who claims an engagement in the Winter Cup.
