SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
The girls' committee of the Victoria League are working very hard to make the entertainment they give this week the great success their last one was. The proceeds, which they hope to bring up to a former occasion when they made £100, will be for the returned, soldiers and their own committee.
A farewell card evening t?as given to Mrs. G. S. Bullen at Mrs, Sutherland's residence,' Whakatane, by ' the members of the. Whakatana Croquet Qlub, when the prized weje Avon by Mesdanies Loane and Holmes. At the close of the evening Mrs.. The members of the Waimauku Tennis Club held a dance in the local hall on Wednesday night. The proceeds go towards repairing the tennis courts. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Kate Wightman and Ron. Jones. Among those present were: —Mesdames J. Adkins, I.- Levett, C. Nairn, H. W. Jeffrey, Burrett, Misses Phillips (Woodhill), K. The monthly meeting of the Haeremai Club; was lield last week, when there was-'an excellent'attendance. Dr. Buckley ATurkingtoir was in the chah , ,. and during the evening Mrs. C. E. Maguire gayfe-an interesting address on "Home." A musical programme was under the carefof Mrs. C. Prime and Mr. George Moody. Songs were sung hy Misses , •Veriia Wishart, Molly Green, Hope Assery. Eva Staires , and Messrs. W. H. Johnson and L. O'Leary. Humorous items iwcre given by Miss Doris Messcr, and. a^'sketch entitled "Breakfast Breeze" Tvas!presented by Misses Ruby Ross, Una Dawson, Eva Staires and Mr. George Moocijr, "The Lady Lawyer," another sketch, was given by Miss Dawson and Jlr.-iioody. A Monte Carlo won by Mr. Eric Walker and Hiss--Jean Smith, '. while two guessing competitions were annexed by Miss Pearl Kimber. A. social afternoon, arranged by the ladies' committee of the- Papatoetoe Girl Guides and Brownies, was held in St. John's Hall, Great South Road, Papatoetoe, on Saturday. A visit was made %; the Countess of Orford, who was received by a guard of honour in the charge of Captain Doreen De Ath, of the •wil . Guides and Brown Owl, Joyce of the Brownies. Mrs. T. H. C. Partridge, president of the Papatoetoe branch of the Guides, presided over a large, gathering. The hall was beautifully decorated with Iceland poppies and golden wattle. On her arrival the Countess of Orford was presented by Misses McFarland and Mavis Carr with a bouquet of violets. Lady Ann Orford and Mss Seth Smith, district commissioner, of the Guides, accompanied the Countess. During the afternoon a musical programme was given, including songs by Mesdames Jellard, Hobday and . Partridge and Miss V. Harrison, violin solos by Miss Daphne Higham and recitations by Misses Margaret McFarlancUand Leah Roseveare and Guide Rita "• Grinter. Afternoon tea was in charge of Mesdames Grinter, McComb, Robinson, Giibb and Hindman. - -
