HIGHER BUS FARES.
TRANSPORT BOARD VIEW.
"INEVITABLE," SAYS MR. ALLUM,
"It seems inevitable," said Mr. J. A. C. Allum, chairman of the Auckland Transport Board, "that the substantial increase in the petrol tax will be reflected in higher omnibus fares. I am already advised by the private omnibus interests that, although they absorbed the taxof 4d a gallon, it will be impracticable for them to bear the additional amount imposed by the new tariff, 7d a gallon. The Auckland Transport Board also bore the 4d a gallon tax without passing any of it on, but I am afraid that the new tax will make it necessary for the board seriously to consider the bus fares. Fortunately the number of buses used by the board is being steadily reduced, and will be still further reduced in proportion as the tramway extensions come into operation."
