MAN BURNED BY STEAM.
CONDITION CRITICAL.
ACCIDENT NEAR MANUREWA.
An employee of the Public Works Department, J. R. Mackwood, of Papakura, while engaged on the duplication work between Papakura and Papatoetoe, was severely scalded by being pinned under a capsized engine near the Mahia railway station, south of Manurewa, about mid-day today, and was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition.
Mackwood was working on a filling 20ft deep, which gave way under the weight of a works locomotive, and he was extensively burned about the arms, chest and face by escaping steam, before he could be. released from his position under the engine. A gang of men shovelled away the earth as the engine lay on its side on the sloping bank of the filling and as steam poured out. Another man, who was close by when the capsize occurred, was also slightly injured.
Dr. Jenkins, of Manurewa, attended Mackwood, and ordered his immediate removal to the hospital. He was brought to Auckland by a passing motorist and was. admitted shortly before 2 o'clock.
