NEARLY A DISASTER.
FORT STREET P/HSHAP. VALUABLE LOAD IN PERIL. LORRY TO THE RESCUE. A valuable load of electric .storage batteries, weighing over two tons, had a narrow eecapc from disaster when the lorry which was carrying them swung round from Queen Street into Fort Street shortly before noon to-day.
The batteries were packed in long wooden crates, and were ,'tanuing on end on the lorry, four in a row. acroe* the vehicle. There were isix rows, and the crates were lashed together by a stout rope. As the lorry swung round the right-angled turn from tin: main throughfare into Fort Street, the load swayed ominously, and the whole stack developed what in nautical circles would be described as a heavy list to starboard; in fact, part of the load hung over tin; roadway, and only the stout hempen rope prevented its collapse,
The driver'pulled up promptly, and a "first aid" message to headquarters brought another lorry along in a few minutes. ]>y judicious backing the second vehicle was bj'ought under the main portion of the load, and it was not a difficult job to bring the crates back to the perpendicular. Tho rescue lorry look part the load, and an episode which had caused not a little entertainment for passers-by came to a happy ending. Fortunately, there w;:s no stoppage to the traffic, which would certainly have been caused Ir.id the mishap occurred at the street comer.
