BOWLING.

SATURDAY'S MATCHES,, FOOTBALL NEXT SATURDAY. LOCAL PUBLICATIONS REVIEWED. (By TPvUNDLER.) Saturday was a long way oil being typical bowling weal her, but a full programme was carried out, with very little interruption from the .showers on some

greens, and none at all on others. The feature of the day was tire fate of the inter-club challenge trophies. In two cases the challengers won, and in the other a tie resulted, which.'is just as good as a, win. Irving Clarke's West End team resisted the third attack since winning the Edwin Stars from Onehunga, but it must be several years

since the holders ran it so close as only to hold the trophies by a tie. Next Saturday's visitors to West End will be Blackie, Martinson, Melville, Elvy (Devonport), and the. next on the. list are A. Wright (Carlton), W. Chiplin (Kawhiti) and AY'. A. Loram (Rocky Nook).

.Mount Albert were; right on the mark when attacking I lie .Remuera holders of tho Denis.on Pins, and. Russell, had to burn ilie iii'sb three heads to save. them. Kven that did not do much good, however, for Allely scored two threes and a, one on the first three heads that were completed, and'" retained the lead throughout. About the middle of the game .Hemuera got within one jioint of the challengers;, but eventually Mount Albert won by three points. Next Saturday the ,ne\v holders will meet Rev. W. P. Uankin (New Lynn), followed bv D. {'. IVaser (Mount Eden), IT. Whittle (Grey Lynn), and'A. C. Bush (Dominion Road).

'The Jordan Pins gave another splendid match mi Saturday. The Onehunga holders had (inly captured these , handsome trophies- front , Te Papapa, by one point, and now they' have lost them to Otahuhu by one point, The position was even closer than the score, indicates, IVir Lippiatt was three down on the last licntlj but got the 'four he wanked for a win. The next eluulengers are -I. McDermott. ,1. White, U. T.M-01l and C. Lynch (Ellcrslie), and they will be. followed by S. W. Thompson (ililisboro , ) and (.'. C'richton (Te I'apapa). The scores in all these matches will lie found in another column.

It:, seems more than likely thai n good many players will \vn\\t to drop otii, of bowls (or l-lio next; two Saturdays, it! order In see the big. football matches. 'Full particulars of I lie players concerned in (lie three challenge malclies are jjiven above, and it would bo as , well, in older to prevent disappointment) for them to ;;et- into communication with each other in fill eases us early as possible and make a mutual arrangement u> postpone any matches as desired. Kllerslie will hold a rink (ountainent on two Saturday afternoons next month, August !) and 1(5. The "Bowlers' Annual." During past \\'\v days vxovy bowler in Auckland will jtavo received a copy ill tho "Bowlers' regaj'ding which one need havju no hesitation in saying lltyt it is IVir and away the best bowling publication in the world. As a record of the jiast season's doings in Xew Zealand in,general, and the Auckland Centre in particular, it, contains a mass of information that is virtually complete, even reviewing- the previous records of all tlie cent re tournaments and the local successes in the Dominion tournaments since they 'were Jirst instituted. The club records are apparently only limited by the inability of a, few ■ clubs to -complete the whole of their ma (dies in time for publication, doubtless owing to the wet weather during about tvvo-.thir<ts of the season. , The illustrations of players, clubs and greens complete an artistic production, and all tho bowlers of Auckland are under an obligation to the editor, Mr. Claude Allan, for providing them with such a memento of their favourite sport. The copies that are sent abroad will al.«q help to show bowlers in other countries what a high standard the game has reached in Xew Zealand in every respect.

J It is more than likely that the copies that go to Australia will be a considerable factor iii influencing bowlers in that country to visit Auckland next January to see in actual' being the people and the, bowling preens so fully described and illustrated. The World' Tour of 1928. A publication of quite a different .character, which,;unfortunately, has only ~a limited circulation, is the "History of the New- Zealand Bowlers' Tour of 1928," for it gives in. detail all the major incidents of that historic; venture from the time the party ] c f|; Wellington until they landed oh the Auckland' ■wharf eight to nine month-- later. It was compiled by Mr. J.. W. .Hardley, president of the toftring party, and he has kept a, wonderful, record of the pedple who were, met in the various 1 countries, and the- interesting places" visited. Ho appears to have exercised a wise discretion in dwelling at length on the great variety of scenes that the party viewed, especially those of his-toric-interest, while giving" only , the bare results of all the matches,' with details of only the Tests. Detailed match results -would become, very wearisome, but none would weary of .reading about the places •-•where our bowlers were .taken by their various hosts, and it h not surprising to find that Mr. Hardley is already receiving most grateful and complimentary references to his book from those recipients overseas who. have had the opportunity to peruse a copy. Those in New Zealand who see the book will be envious of the < v ood luck of the tourists, and , a goo.! many will begin to look forward to fcl'o time, when another such trip is planned, so that [hey can enjoy the pleasures-,so 'graphically described.
