SCENES IN HISTORIC MALTA-A CENTRE OF POLITICAL CONTROVERSY.
The island of Malta, the naval base of the British fleet in the Mediterranean, has been the subject of recent controversy. The island, which is rich in history, dates back to its colonisation by the Phoenicians, and was formally ceded to Britain by the treaty of Paris in 1814. Owing to the alleged interference by the Vatican in the internal politics of the island the British Government last month suspended the constitution and placed the full legislative, and executive authority in the hands of Lord .Strickland. Himself a Roman Catholic, Lord Strickland refused to allow the Roman Catholic authorities to expel from the island, on political grounds, one of his supporters, and the Imperial Government has upheld him in his action..
