Sir Archie has not been required to do any strenuous tasks eince he raced at the June meteing. The big chestnut gelding is looking bright and healthy and may be given a run at the Pakuranga meeting. The Lucullus —Little Flower colt in J. M. Buchanan's stable has had the name Hawthorn conferred on him. This youngster puts plenty of dash into his work on the track and is a likely-look-ing sort. Diamond' Queen (J. Burgess) was given a further schooling lesson over the pony hurdles at headquarters this morning . and got through her task in promising style. In South ' Africa it is stated that owners of all winning horses which start at 10 to 1 or over receive £100 from the Bookmakers' Association. The longer the odds the more pleased the mookmakers are to pay the amount mentioned. The Auckland cross-country rider H. Dulieu has had a great innings during the present Reason,' having steered 30 winners to date. This horseman has improved considerably as a rider during the past couple of years. Terra. Firma. who . dead-heated with Jayson for third place in the Trial Plate, is a rising three-year-old gelding by Acre from Minor, by Foremost from Minora. He had only started on two previous occasions and is a likely improver when he has had more racing experience. The Lapidary juvenile in .F. Gilchrist's stable has made good, progress since coming to Ellerslie and is a very robustlooking sort. He was sprinted .a couple of furlongs on the two-year-old track yesterday morning and shaped well, considering it was the first time he had been asked to go fast. ~

Great Emblem and Puriri Park have done well since being recommissioned by F. Gilchrist, who is giving them plenty of the right class of work to fit them for racing in the new season. Both these rising three-year-olds, who have furnished nicely during the winter, will be racing next spring.

Gemlight, who was shipped to Sydney yesterday, has been getting through plenty of solid work during the past few weeks and will be ready to race soon after his arrival in Australia. He displayed promising form this season, and, properly placed, should win plenty of money across the Tasman, for he has been steadily improving with age and has not been over-raced.

The two Ellerslie-trained horses Maori Boy and Lady's Boy failed to get into the money at Trentham. -They have both done considerable racing this season and it is just possible that they will be given a let up until the new season begins. Maori Boy.has been a good stake-winner for his owner, Mr. T. Davison, and should still be capable of paying his Avay. during the coming period.

Gay Cockade is having an easy time at present, his tasks being confined to light work around the roads and hills, and he is thriving well on it. He has thickened out quite a lot and is in splendid fettle to undergo a preparation for the coming season. This gelding <ran several good races during the current term, and it would not surprise to find him capable of winning in better company next season.

Day Comet is now second on the winning sires' list, his progeny having won over £16,000 during the present season. His total last year was £15,157, which placed the imported horse third on the list. Day Comet has sired a number of good performers,, and as they both gallop and jump proficiently they are likely to keep his name well up on the list for some time to come. .

When Mount Shannon won the Ranguru Handicap at Otaki last month he recorded his first success. The race was run over one mile and 55 yards and he won impressively from Best Friend and Spearform. fhe success gained by Best Friend in the Whyte Handicap at Trentham last Tuesday pointed to Mount Shannon being hard to beat in the Highweight Handicap, which he duly won. The son of Solferino and Mazurka is expected to develop into a good performer.

The latest additions to the active brigade at Ellerslie are Trace and Leasehold. The former is a five-year-old mare by Surveyor from. Miss Hazel, who has joined Geo. Holland's stable; . while Leasehold is attached to J. Chisholm's stable. Leasehold is by Acre from Elinore, by Sylvia Park from 'Frisco Maid, and is a rising three-year-old, who promises to develop into a fine type of galloper. He was raced on three occasions this season, and although he failed to get in the money his form was promising.

Among the horses in work at Ellerslie none are doing better than W. Gall's team, which includes Lusoma, Grand Spirit. and Stimulant. The trio have been getting through a lot of solid work at headquarters and they are in capital condition at present. .Grand Spirit is putting plenty of dash into her work and there is every prospect of her being a payable filly during her three-year-old career next season. Lusoma and Stimulant have not had enough racing to gauge their future prospects accurately, but they have both shown themselves possessed of speed aud should be capable of winning hack races wheii .properly seasoned.

A filly by Valkyrian from Te Akitai will be put into work at Ellerslie under W. J. Hawkins' supervision within the nest few weeks.

Taneriri is still out in the paddock and will not be brought in again just yet a while. The Antagonist gelding paid his way well during the present season, but displayed signs of soreness when racing in the autumn and was blistered and turned out for a spell in the paddock.

Bizarro has resumed work again at Ellerslie under Owner J. Ross' care. The Absurd gelding is looking bright and healthy for this time of the year, and it will not be ; long before he is ready to race again." "W. Kemp is a daily attendant at Ellerslie with King Emerald, Gold Money and Ruling King. They are only' doing easy tasks at present, but look in good heart to commence the new season, and their owner should have a profitable time ahead. On the No. 3 grass track this morning Grand Spirit reeled off three furlongs in 39 1-s.l—a useful effort—considering the state of the ground. Lusoma and Stimulant were sprinted over a similar distance, which they covered in 40s. Both did their work in good style and appear to be making steady progress. Marble Mount, who has been qualified as a hunter, hit out with plenty of freedom over a round on the No. 3 grass track on Thursday morning. This gelding has improved a good deal since he raced at the Great Northern meeting, and W. J. Hawkins should be able to pick up some stake money with him in hunters' events later on. The Te Awamutu owner Mr. Geo. Paul was in town during the week, and reported that his team, comprising Awarere, Shamgar, Sir Kay and Trishna, were all doing well. They will not race until the going is firm again, and therefore will be missing from the Pakuranga meeting next month. Sir Kay and Trishna are a promising pair of gallopers that look like paying their way during the coming season.
