GRAPHIC ARTS.
AUCKLAND EXHIBITION. WORK OF DOMINION ARTISTS. Arrangements are being made by the authorities of the Auckland Art Gallery for a loan exhibition of New Zealand work in the graphic arts, to be held, at the end of this month. Three years ago the gallery inaugurated' a scheme of loan exhibitions, and the-.director, Mr. John Barr, says that a useful service has been done in the interests of art. Attendances have been greater than the promoters anticipated.Last year an exhibition devoted to the graphic arts -was held, and its success prompted the suggestion to hold an exhibition limited to the graphic arts in New Zealand, so that students and collectors interested in prints might get a comprehensive idea of the work of this nature produced in the Dominion. The Auckland Library committee, which controls these exhibitions, has appointed Mr. T. V. Gulliver and a sub-committee to arrange a display in one of the rooms of the Art Gallery, and has issued invitations to those interested to contribute examples of their work. About 70 artists are doing work in the graphic arts, and their prints, the committee considers, should be shown. It is* hoped thatv a majority will be induced to exhibit. An endeavour will be -made to show at least one specimen of each class of work produced, but the scope of the exhibition will be determined, to some extent, by the space available. Although the primary purpose of the exhibition is educational, it' is possible that.some purchases will be made. The gallery has recently made a beginning with a print collection, and Mr. Banstates that it will consider making additions. The exhibition will be open for three weeks or a month, a_nd may be followed hy displays of the work of well-known artist photographers in America and Europe.
