ASSISTING UNEMPLOYED.
EXTRA TROTTING PERMIT.
GRANT TO AUCKLAND CLUB.
TWO-DAY MEETING PROPOSED,
The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. P. A. de la, Perrelle, has granted totalisator permits for a, two-day trotting meeting to be put on by the Auckland Trotting Club to raise funds to assist the unemployed. Recently Mr. W. chairman of the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, made personal representations to the Minister requesting tlie necessary permits, it being understood that if the permits were granted the Auckland Trotting Club would put on a two-day meeting at Alexandra Park. Recognising that the spirit, which had for its object the assisting of the unemployed, was noteworthy, the
Minister lias acceded to tlie request, but lie has stipulated that the stakes to be given each day shall not exceed £2000, and that the proceeds of the meeting, including the taxes to be remitted, be divided equally between the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board and the Auckland City Council, the payments to the latter body to be expended in wages only. Mr. J. Rowe, president of the Auckland Trotting Club, stated on Saturday that his committee would meet immediately to consider the proposal. If the meeting were staged the dates would probably be August 30 and September 1. In August last year the Auckland Trotting Club held a one-day meeting to assist the earthquake relief funds, and on that occasion the substantial sum of £50(51 was raised.
