WENT TO THE TALKIES.

YOUTH'S DECEPTIVE DEVICE-

HAXSED LOAN ON PARCEL OF

PEBBLES

POLICE COURT SEQUEL,

(By Telegraph.--Own Correspondent.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. A pretty scheme for defrauding an innocent and unsuspecting "women of 0/ was unfolded in the Police Court this morning which bore some slight resemblance to the ancient Biblical story of the youth who selected a few smooth stones with which to defeat the Philistine giant. Obsessed with a desire to see a screening of a popular picture now on circuit, the principal actor in the comedy-drama, .Tames McFarlane Williamson, called at the shop of Mrs. Annie Pickles on Wednesday and left a small, but rather heavy parcel, which ho said contained cogwheels which he had purchased from Newton King's for his employer, Mr. Foxj of Tumalia. The wheels were said to have cost (3/ and the man borrowed that sum for the purpose of "booking seats for his employer for the 'Gold Diggers of Broadway'," and the employer was to come and pay for the purchase. The non-arrival of Mr. Fox created suspicions and on the parcel being opened it was found to contain nine smooth stones. The man was subsequently apprehended and he was charged this morning with false pretences. He pleaded guilty and expressed regret. The police said that Williamson had previously' been convicted of theft and of false pretences. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within six months.
