GUNNERY PRACTICE.
WAStIHIP IN GULF. 'PLANE TO TOW TARGET. H.M.s. Laburnum returned to Auckland on Saturday morning after assisting H.M.s. Dunedin in the exercises in the Hauraki Gulf. The Laburnum will leave on Wednesday for a prolonged cruise in the South Sea Islands. She is scheduled to return to Auckland about the middle of October. H.M.s. Dunedin, which is still in the Gulf, will continue her gunnery and torpedo exercises this week. Firing practice will also be carried out, inciudiirr defence against aircraft. According to the programme issued by the Naval D"- ] Lirtrnent, anti-aircraft practice w'll take place at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to-mor-row. One of the Fairey aeroplanes is to leave Hobsonville at 0 a.m for the rendezvous about 13 miles off Tiri. Snecial apparatus for the towing of a drogue target has been fitted to the 'p'ane. representing a "wind so<k."' about 26 feet long, the target will be towed abo;t 6600 ft behind the 'plane to ensure safety asrainst inaccurate shooting. The aeroplane will be in flight for" about three hours on each occasion. Other gvinnerv practice will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, and on the following day the Dunedin will return to Auckland. After a few davs in port she will leave for Tonga.
