MUNICIPAL BAND.

A programme selected from the works of leading opera composers was presented by the Municipal Band at its concert in the Town Hall last Saturday evening. The bandsmen gave enjoyable performances of the excerpts, and were warmly greeted at the termination of the items. Wagner's fine march from opened the concert, and it received a stately and dignified unfolding, wherein the brass executants excelled themselves. Flotow's overture to "Martha" was tastefully enacted, the solo parts were clearly defined, and the ensemble was good. The different families of instruments did notable work in the various numbers from Leoncavallo's opera, "I Pagliacci" and Romberg's selections from "The Desert Song" were admirably presented. Verdi's "Anvil Chorus" and movements from some of his operas were pleasjngly rendered. Bellini's "Sovra il Sen" wa.s capably delivered by the cornetist, Mr. F. Bowes, and Mr. H. C. McLennan was warmly praised after his skilful delivery of the Verdi-Briccialdi flute solo, "I Masnadieri." Vocal items were acceptably rendered by Messrs. R. Evans.and lan Devereux, Miss Gordon acting as pianist. Mr. Christopher Smith conducted the concerted pieces.
