"SCRAGGY" FOOTBALL

One can, as a rule, depend on days with a nippy chill in the air to provide fast and entertaining football. Such was the case at Eden Park on Saturday in the senior match between College Rifles and City. Although College proved themselves the better team on results, the game was even enough, both teams attacking regularly at various stages of the game. The play.was mostly of the loose variety. In the first half, College hooked more successfully from the serums, where in the latter half, City had the advantage. Rough tactics were very much in evidence, and at intermittent periods "of the play someone would have the misfortune to be laid out. S. Souster (College Rifles), retired early with an' injured eye," and Dodd (College, Rifles) sustained a broken rib. Another College man received a painful shin wouud which ptit him temporarily out of play. Donald (College Rifles) and Kerr-Taylor (City), were warned a second, time by referee J. Sweeney, when he found*.them settling a difference on the ground near' the touchline at the feet of--the spectators. The pair had forgotten for about three seconds that football was the sport for the afternoon, not wrestling. A feature of the game was a beautiful drop by Carter, who secured the ball from the loose . and "dropped'* a four-point goal. Growing ambitious, he had another attempt a little later on, this time from half-way, but, though the kick was a good one, it failed. All the. scoring was effected in the first half, though more spectacular play was witnessed in the second. Hunt, securing the oval from some loose play, made a dash for the line and scored. .Tohnson later on converted a penalty, placing the ball neatly between the posts. Rover Warren, who had joined a passing rush by the College backs, secured-the ball and, in a-brilliant swerving dash down field, where he eluded three men, scored, and then converted the kick. Several men played useful games, but the half-backs, Kirk and Dehiiie, were most in evidence. The game ended in the favour of College Rifles by seven points, the scores being, College Rifles 11, City 4.
