FOOTBALL TEST PROSPECTS.

The match- between the British touring fifteen and the local team at Wellington vestcrday has been anticipated with a great deal of interest, as.likely io throw some light on New- Zealand's prospects in the coming Tests. -The result was a very creditable victory for Wellington, but it is to be hoped that it will not inspire undue confidence either in our players or among'the football enthusiasts who include a very large percentage of our total population. The Wellington side is a very formidable one, especially in the back division, and the long experience of Nicholls and Porter assures effective team work., In this respect ■ it is doubtful if any representative side is quite the equal of our best provincial teams or even the best club teams, in which the men are accustomed to playing together perhaps for several seasons. However, the fact that Wellington has succeeded in lowering the colours of the British team should be not only' a great satisfaction to the victors, but an encouragement and inspiration to the All Blacks when the battle is actually joined in the decisive Tests. Anything like over-confidence is to be severely deprecated, especially as yesterday's victory was won only by a narrow margin, and the scale might easily have turned in the last few minutes of the game. But what happened at.Wellington proves that our visitors are not invincible, and we may at least accept it as a i aTOfwabie-owmt i or - th«-£ata*e.
