AUCKLAND ORPHANS' CLUB.

HIS EXCELLENCY A GUEST

PRAISE • FOR ORCHESTRA,

The Auckland Orphans' Club held its third-meeting of the session at the Scots Hall on Saturday evening when the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Bledisloe, • was the guest of honour. Mr. J. Stanton,-vice-president, occupied the 'chair, and there was present over 800 members and visitors, including Sir Alexander Herdman, and Commanders- N. . Clover and A. G. Hothani, R.N.

The Gove: nor-General, in replying to the warm welcome accorded him, sakl that he had been' prepared for the great similarity , between .this country and England, but he was surprised to find just how great was the resemblance —in loyalty patriotism and a healthy outlook on life, even in .a time of industrial depression. ' .. ( The orchestra, his Excelleny said he had been informed, was the backbone of the club and, having heard it,, agreed. He had heard many orchestras in vraious parts of ith.e world, and if 'this was a sample of what New Zealand had to offer in the way of music by voluteers he would like to know if any professional orchestra could compare with them. His Excellency concluded by thanking the club for its very warm welcome, and said he hoped he would have an opportunity of visiting them again. He left to the tune of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow." The orchestra, under Mr. Harold Baxter, gave a spirited rendering of the "Bohemian Girl" overture and the Gon doliers selection and in addition accompanied by Mr. Stan Prichard in "Drake Goes West" and Mr. V. Carter in his piccolo solo "The Comet.'' An excellent conjuring turn was given by "Cardo" and vocal items by Messrs. A. Ripley, H. Richards, Alan McElwam, E. Thomas and Duncan Black. The accompaniments were shared by Messrs. Cyril Towsey and Trevor Sparlmg.
