ADVICE TO BOYS.
"BE KEEN ; BE CLEAN."
HIS EXCELLENCY'S ADDRESS.
VISIT TO GRAMMAR SCHOOL.
The Governor-General, Lord Bledisloo, and Lady Bledisloe, paid a visit to the Auckland Grammar School yesterday. The cadets battalion was drawn up in review order to receive them, and after presenting arms 5 they marched past in column of route.. His Excellency took the salute.
Professor A. P. W. Thomas expressed the hope that their Excellencies wouil honour the'school with further visits.
His Excellency complimented the school on the fine guard of honour. After referring to the physique and work of the lads, he said that tlie exterior of the school was quite familiar. In the first place it bore remarkable similarity to a building at Riverside, in the centre of the citrus fruit area of California; secondly, while in Auckland he was accustomed to taking a stroll up Mount Eden, each day for exercise. • Coming from comfortable homes and receiving an excellent education pupils from secondary schools, such as the Auckland Grammar, were expected to do their part in shaping the future of the Dominion. There were three rules for good citizenship—''Be keen, be clean and don't be mean." Keenness meant grit and perseverance to carry out jiny undertaking. Being clean did not only mean being physically and wearing clean clothes; it meant being clean in one's outlook on life —it meant being a white man. His Excellency told the boys not to be mean—not necessarily in money matters, but in thought, word and deed. He urged the boys to be ambitious. It was wrong to be content with secondplace if one thought that one had qualifications for first place. Cheers were given for their Excellencies and a half-holiday was granted.
