A WELCOME EXPLANATION.
S Ifc was very 'difficult to believe that the circular ' to" postal ' employee's which wS published a few, days ago represented .the policy'of the Department. 'It was* well-nigh incredible that the Department" wbuld;:treat "casual" hands, who ;hr many ; . cases T were "casual" only Mn name, in this unfeeling fashion. ■ . The / head ', of the Government has now made a statement which clears "up the matter. The much-criticised circular was nbt issued by the head office of the Postal Department, or with its knowledge, and apparently it arose in Auckland out of a misinterpretation of papers dealing with certain isolated cases. Mr. Forbes gives his assurance that ho restriction will be placed on the re-engagemeut of men whose absence has been involuntary. No disadvantageous conditions are being imposed or considered regarding the casual staff. The explanation is very welcome, and would probably have been made earlier but for the exceptional political conditions of the Hit few days.
