SYDNEY YEARLING BOUGHT. '%KOMISINrG JUVENILES AT ASHBUETON. ;CB7 Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") CHEESTCHUECH, Monday. Tiro ChristchTirclr sportsman Mr. F. Williamson, who las had a fair measure of success in recent years -with Sun Up, Amor, and Leader, has followed up his sale ;of Amor in Sydney by purchas-ing-an Australian-bred yearling, which will arrive here this week and join T. H. Gillett's stable at Eiccarton. He is a brother to Oatendale, by Eossendale from Oat Eock, an imported mare by the Desmond horse Charles CMalley. Cat Eock'comes- from a great English f amilyto which Kilbroney has brought considerable fame in this part of the world. Oatendale, the brother to Mr. Williamson's juvenile, was a good racehorse, his three-year-old, performances including, third to Prince Humphrey and Mbllison in the Australian-Jockey Club's Derby. The colt was withdrawn *at the Sydney yearling sales last month, and Mr. Williamson secured Mm privately. The Auckland yearling filly by Valkyrian from Black-eyed Susan has been purchased by Mr. H. C. Newman, of Hokitika, and she will join the Eeefton stable of A G. Griffin, for which Eavine and Smithereens have done good service ' lately. Arrowmaid, who finished fourth in the Longbeach Handicap at Ashburton, is a three-year-old filly by Arrowsmith, her dam being an unnamed mare by Gay Lad from Furling, a Downshire mare who won races when trained at Eiccarton a few years ago. Arrowmaid won two races on the West Coast last month, and she may add to her record before long, as she possesses a fine dash of speed. Interference soon after the start contributed to her defeat at Ashburton. Mr. F. T. Buchanan has done well with Gay Sonnet, and though this Gay Lad mare may not last much longer there are two young relatives in the stable likely to prove useful. One of these is Fiaxbird, a three-year-old by Songbird from Electric Lass, a sister to Gay Sonnet, and the other is Night Eecital, hy Nightraid from Gay Sonnet's dam Elocution, by Demosthenes from Eangaio. The two novices were racing at Ashburton, where each of them ran into third place ; Night Eecital is inclined to be fractious, but he and his mate possess speed, and they are likely to become "useful performers. Among the novices who took part in the Trial Flate at Ashburton on Saturday the two-year-old Minerval came in for a lot of support. He competed in the first_ division, finishing fifth, and though his admirers expected him to do better it was quite a useful performance, seeing that he had nad no previous race experience. He is a smart galloper, and he will do much better later on. Minerval is by Arrowsmith, his dam being Lady Minerva, by Martian from Lady Lillian, oy Phaeton from Lady Zetland, so that he has a great family reputation to support him. "" " The Day Comet gelding Pukerinm, who was having bis first race this season, accounted for the Manunui Hurdles at Taumarunui in convincing style. He was always in the lead, and although he ran down one of his fences his jumping on the whole was good. He was lame after the race, and his trainer, F. Loomb, may have a bit of trouble to keep him going. He appeared a bit big in condition, and if he- remains sound will be an improved horse the nest time he is ,lf Ued up to race.-.!'!J 1- ..._..-.-
