In 1817 a British pianoforte Was presented to Beethoven aad was much admired by the great composer. It was an example Ofotha best type of pianoforte ol that time. It bad a compass of _ six octaves. To-day's pianoforte—and, indeed, the ordinary upright of the average British bottle—is a far superior instrument to that best of its class and time whjfch'was "presented.to the greatest living inbsioian. The pianoforte of to-day. has a -compass of seven-and-a-half octaves, but more thai: that, its !D<swer, and sonority, and beauty of tone so far exceed those of the instrument oi a century ago that the pianoforte we know can be said to be another instrument altoget her. . • .
