June 19, 21—South Canterbury J.C. June 20, 21—Hawke's Bay J.C. G. Reid will leave for Hawera to-mor-row night with Valstreet, Glenstar and Town Bird. Mr. R. McMiken, who is well known in racing circles, and who recently underwent two operations at Hamilton, lias left for a trip to the Old Country. The two-year-ohl Valley, who fell while contesting the Nursery Handicap at Avondale, had to be destroyed after returning to Takanini, as lie had injured his jawbone. Valley was bred in Australia, and cost Mr. A. McDonald 850 guineas. He was an exceptionally well bred youngster, and had shown more than average promise in his only two races.

The Egmont Steeplechase, which will be decided on Thursday next at Hawera, has drawn a very fair field. Nukumai, who is at the head of those engaged, lias not proved successful in a steeplechase since lie won this event in 1920. Brigadier Bill has run well in this event during the last two seasons, winning it in 1928 and finishing second last season. Matu was second in the Grand National Steeplechase last season, and is a good jumper when properly right. Maunga won- the July Steeplechase at Wellington, and Airtight was successful in the Mangere Steeplechase at Ellerslie recently. Birkbeck won the Aylesbury Steeplechase at Riccarton, after proving successful in the June Steeplechase at Hawke's Bay, while Aurora Borealis won the Woodlands Steeplechase at Hawke's Bay last June, and was third in a hack steeplechase at Trentham. Ronjola has shown ability in hunt club events, and altogether there is plenty of material for a good race.

J, Luminary has shown a lot of pace on the flat> and is reported to be schooling well over hurdles at Cambridge. He would only need to be able to jump properly in a race to win a hack hurdle event during the winter. Paleta, who has not raced for some time, has been accepted for in the Flying Handicap at Hawera on Thursday. Paleta showed a lot of pace as a two-year-old, and is among those nominated for the Cornwall ' r " "Heap at Ellerslie. British King is smi at Avondale, and it is more than probable that he will make the trip to Hawera next week to contest the Flying Handicap. This horse raced well at Auckland and Avondale, and should pay his way if taken south. W. McLean, of Cambridge, has Manifest under his charge. He is a four-year-old by Autumn or Three Cheers from Blue Sea, and has won a couple of races this season. Formerly lie was trained by his owner, Mr. A. Harris, of Gisborne. Lady Quex won the All-aged Stakes at Avondale with 9.5, and ran second 'in the Mount Eden Handicap with 9.10. She is engaged in the Flying Handicap with 9.8 at Hawera on Thursday, and as she is very well just now, should again take some beating. Kaha, who showed promise in the spring by winning the Clarkin Handicap, one mile, at Te Rapa, and finishing second to Luminary in the Waikato Hack Cup of similar distance, has been paid up for in the Tawhiti Hack Handicap, eight furlongs and a half, at Egmont next Thursday. He is by Limond, and should race well if started. AUCKLAND RACING- CLUB.
