LOCAL BODIES.
DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Devonport Borough Council met last i evening, the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. J. Hisiop, presiding. Leave of Absence. —The Mayor, Mr. E. Aldridge, was granted leave of absence for six months. He stated that he had been appointed to an executive position in the newspaper world in Christekureh. For the sake of his many local affiliations, he had requested that the position should be mutually reviewed at the end of six months. In granting the Mayor's request, the council unanimously expressed mingled regret and pleasure, in which sentiments they were joined by Mr. S. E. Kennings, president of the Waitemata Chamber of Commerce, and Messrs. P. King and C. Hales, or the North Devonport Ratepayers' Association. Melrose Ratepayers' Requests.—A deputation, headed by Messrs. Parker and Enright, requested the council to kerb, channel and permanently form Victoria Road: to link up all roads terminating in Shoal Bay; to improve the dangerous intersection of Mozley Avenue and Lake Road; and to tar and sand all footpaths in the area. The deputation's requests were promised early consideration by council. North Devomport Affairs. —Another deputation from North Devonport presented a list of sixteen streets for which tarring and sanding operations were requested. The Deputy-Mayor assured the deputation that everything possible would be done to improve the disabilities complained off. It would cost nearly £4000 to do the work as suggested, and with the many claims made upon its finance, the council had to adjust its expenditure by the relative urgency of all propositions. Obstetrical Appeal.—£s 5/ was donated to the Devonport fund of the obstetrical appeal. Stanley Bay Cricket Club. —The council decided to supply 50yds of soil to improve the playing area on Stanley Bay Park. Yauxhall Drainage.—Communication was received from Mr. H. H. Watkins, engineer of the Auckland Drainage Board, stating that until the presentation of his comprehensive report on the major drainage problems of the Auckland district, he would not be able to report upon the proposals to improve the Vauxhall outfall of Devonport's system. NEWMARKET COUNCIL. The Newmarket Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presiding. It was resolved to issue six debentures of £100 each under the relief of unemployment loan scheme, and one debenture of a like amount for street improvements. Both will bear interest at the rate of 5% per cent. The Mayor and Mr. R. T. Michaels were appointed to represent the borough at the public inquiry, to be held in the Town Hall on Monday next, to determine the boundaries of the area to be included in the regional town-planning district. Mr. R. Philpot was appointed delegate to the Local Bodies' Association to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr. A. P. Wickens. • ONE TREE HILL ROAD BOARD. The chairman, Mr. J. S. Hardwicke, presided over last evening's meeting of the One Tree Hill Road Board. It was reported by the building inspector that sixteen building permits, to the value of £4123, had been issued since the last meeting. The value of permits issued since the beginning of the year was £14,114. Permission was given the Society for the Protection of Women and Children to conduct • a street collection in conjunction •with the Community Sunshine Association, on September 12. A donation of £5 5/ was made towards the Poppy Day funds.
