LOCAL BODIES.

MOUNT EDEN COUNCIL. The Mount Eden Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr. E. H. Potter) presiding. Economy.—At the suggestion of Mr. W. H. Xagle, the Finance Committee was instructed to report as to whether any economies can be recommended tor the ensuing year. "This is simply what every business concern is doing to-day— overhauling and taking stock," said Mr. Xagle. Firemen on Duty.—Regulations for firemen on duty on licensed premises such as picture theatres were approved. Provision is made for ensuring that fire fighting appliances are in good order, and that exits and passageways in places of entertainment are in no way obstructed.

Delegates to Conference. —The Deputy Mayor (Mr. A. M. Bryden) and Messrs. Xage, F.- L. Rendell and Joll were appointed to represent the council at a conference of local bodies to be convened by the Hospital Board to discuss unemployment relief.

Postal Facilities. —In reply to a request that a larger post office box should "be provided at the corner of Kensington Avenue, the chief postmaster -wrote stating that increased facilities were not ■warranted.

Building Progress.—lt was reported that during the month of March building permits had been issued to the value of £8738. The principal items concerned the erection of four houses at a cost of £6300,. alterations and additions £1115, and garages £1100.

MANUREWA TOWN BOARD. The Manurewa Town Board held its fortnightly meeting last evening, the chairman (Mr. Geo. Galkher) presiding brer a full attendance of members. Health Inspector.—The Health Department wrote accepting the board's offer to contribute £35 towards the cost of the health inspector's services, and advised that the position would be reviewed in one year's time. Danger Corner.—The Alfriston-Brookby Residents' Association wrote drawing the •board's attention to the necessity of cutting back the corner of the intersection of Alfriston and Great South Roads. The chairman expressed the opinion that the corner was a dangerous one. The owners of the property concerned, the Methodist Trust Board, had agreed to cut down the offending trees, but a special committee appointed by the town board on a previous occasion had not deemed this step advisable. It was decided to advise the association that the matter would be further looked into. Weymouth Road. —A resident of this road wrote drawing the board's attention to the condition of the portion between Lup ton's Road and the railway line It was decided to effect temporary repairs, pending a general inspection of the district's roads by the board members in the near future. Dangerous Crossing.—The school committee wrote referring to the dangerous crossing at the intersection of Hill Road and Great South Road, and suggesting that lines be drawn across the concrete paving as a guide to children. After some discussion, it was decided to reply that the matter would be given consideration, and to suggest that the committee ask the traffic committee to allow its inspector to give the children a course of instruction relating to traffic.

Proposed Stock Pound—Mr. _C. S. McCallum, a local ratepayer, waited on the board with a view to ascertaining its attitude towards the establishment or a stock pound in a neighbouring district. It was decided that the board had no funds available for this purpose.

Bus Services—The proprietors of the Auekland-Pukekohe bus service yrote expressing regret at the recent complaints or overcrowding. The hope was expressed that the company would be lmmediately informed in the event of future complaints. The traffic inspector said that the company had endeavoured to cope ■with the situation. The letter vras iavourably commented on.
