NATIONAL ART GALLERY
THE DOMINION MUSEUM. WELLINGTON'S. CARILLON. PLAXS' REFERRED BACK. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day.
It-is now eomo two months since competition closed in connection with plans for the new National Art Gallery, Dominion Museum, and carillon tower. The position now is that the three assessors selected, from some twenty odd sets of plans, all of which had merit, three which in their judgment were outstanding. These, it was found, needed amendment of a e more or less technical character to comply with all conditions, economical and otherwise, required by the trustees, and were remitted back to the architects concerned for such adjustments. These plans are returnable in May, when the plans will bo again scrutinised in detail by the assessors and placed in order, first, second, and third. Then the prizes will be awarded. The plans of the winner will then be returned to him, and he ■will proceed to make working drawings, which, as may be imagined, will be a work extending over several montliis, so that it is not likely that tenders will be called for the work of construction until about November next. It is being urged that construction of the carillon tower should be the first consideration, and the trustees will be asked to make its construction a separate contract, and completion of its plane a primary consideration. It is expected that th<j bells will arrive here before the end of the year. If that is so, it ifl anticipated that tenders for the tower may be called in August riext, which would mean its conipetion by the end of the year.
