BOROUGH BREEZE

WOItKS FOREMAN CRITICISED

MUST TAKE .HIS COAT OFF.

The . Ota'huhu Borough Council last night had a lively discussion arising otit of°som'c criticism of the borough foreman. The matter had .been introduced on some complaint made at a previous meeting when the works committee wad requested to furnish a report on the subject- The committee now reported: "Your committee has inquired into the methods of repair, and is satisfied that the present administration and methods aro quite satisfactory under the existing conditions."

Mr. Trenwith: I am surprised at the report. ;

The Mayor: The foreman's explanation is quite ■satisfactory. It was a> question of methods and he was the best judge between hot mix and penetration. The latter was used.

' Mr. Graham: The explanation is not satisfactory and the -works committee is not dealing with the question. Mr. Grey eaid the Mayor's statement wae not correct. There had been a want of judgment, and he could point to a few monuments of the foreman's ineflieienev.

Mr. Hunter, in moving that the clause

do deleted, said that the council had to find fault with the foreman four times Unci yet it seemed to be the policy of certain' councillors' to. find excuses for him. This was a changed attitude, as previous to the election they had been loudest in their condemnation. He considered that in view of the email staff at present under the. control of the foreman, ho should take his coat off and work Avith the men. He moved: "That the foreman be instructed to go out as a working foreman, as originally engaged, and at the end of the month his work be reviewed." > On a vote being taken the clause was deleted and a motion stating, "that the present, methods of administration of the borough works are wasteful". was carried. ,'"?
