GROWING ANEMONES IN POTS.
Anyone who possesses a cold greenhouse and is desirous of having it as cay as possible, should certainly include a patch or two of anemones; they are brilliantly decorative. Procure tubers as early as possible, prepare a sufficient number of "48" size pots, and have ready a compost of good loam, leaf-soil and sand, with a little dry cow manure added. Drain the pots well, place a layer of leaves above the drainage, then add some of the compost. Press it
down and make it level. Place the tubers in position, allow five to each pot, and more of the compost, arranging that the tubers are about two inches below the surface of the soil and ample water space is given. After potting, place them in a cold frame or a wooden box with a layer of ashes below, and give protection from lights only during severe weather. As growth commences remove them to a greenhouse. CUTTING BACK VINE GROWTHS After the bunches of grapes have been cut, all the laterals that require it may be shortened. This presumes that the grapes have all been used or cut and stored. Then the laterals may he cut back to four or six buds or leaves from the main rods. This will help the vines to plump up the lower buds that will produce the fruiting laterals next year.
Too great stress cannot be laid on the proper ripening of the wood to get good results. To do this there should be no crowding of the foliage to prevent sun and air from getting to the wood. No shading should be used, but the vines should be fully exposed to all the sunshine available. At the same time, the top and side ventilators should be kept fully open night and day, except during heavy rain. This exposure to light and air has a wonderful influence in hardening the wood and forming good fruit buds for the next season.
