SUMMER BOWLING.
TOURNAMENTS THIS WEEK, PENNANT FINAL ON SATURDAY CHAMPION'S MEET XEXT WEEK. (By TRUXDLER.)
Daylight saving went out on Saturday night after exactly four weeks of about the most beautiful weather that even Auckland has ever enjoyed, probably leaving everybody, like Oliver P wist', anxiously asking for more. Howevei, Sir Thomas Sidey was well advised in limiting the period, after sixteen unsuccessful attempts to introduce a lull hour for six months, for it is tar better to close it down while the whole community realises what a great boon- it has been, for now be will be supported when he tries to extend the time, even by those who had opposed it when vie} did not understand its benefits. A continuation of perfect summer weather enabled the annual I.llk tournament of the Public Service Associa.rio • to be played on Monday under ideal conditions, and a very enjoyable day was spent at Keniuera. The Auckland Centre's pairs tournament lias also commenced under exceptionally foitunate conditions. o',d the section winners will meet on the Carlton green to-morrow morning at 8.4.). The centre executive very considerately consulted Helensville as to how they would like to play the final in the pennant competition against the Auckland Club next Saturday, and they have replied that as they would find it virtually impossible to send four ri- Irs to the city they would prefer to play it home and home. Good Greens Wanted. Mr. W. M. Horton. of who lins been greatly interesting himself in the treatment of bowling preens and sport's prounds during the past few years, and whose experiences have re'•ev',lv liroii pj-en publicity in tlii* •c'l'Tcn. wHI eive an address on 'I'ture in the Carlton pavilion this even'm.y co'iuneneing at 7.43. Tn view of the •'o'rabP't*- for better greens, it is lo b" hoped that liis lecture will be attended by all trreenkeepers. rrreen superintendents and creeii commit tee® in Auckland, so that hi« methods may be studied and adiinted durinp the autumn .11 if: winter, thus assuring better greens for next season. A Visit to Hamilton. It is proposed to play tiie return match for the Hardley Shield on ciie Hamilton green next Wednesday week, April 2. and all who care to go are requested to send in their names to the secretary of the Auckland Centre bynext Monday, so that the South Auckland Centre can be advised as to how many rinks they will need to provide, to meet the visitors. The intention is to leave for Hamilton by the ordinal"." Wellington express the previous evening. and to return by the Daylight Limited on Wednesday evening, after playing two matches. A good deal ot visiting has been going on in Wellington lately, and to-day 14 rinks from the Manawatu Centre are to pay a return visit to the capital to play the Wellington Centre. The competition for the Cadness Cup was concluded last week, resulting in an aggregate win tor Dcvonport bv 20 ooiuts. This is a mid-week two-rink tournament, each of the four "marine suburban '' clubs playing the other three. Devonport won it with 339 points, and then followed Takapuna with .">:>!), Stanley 42(i. and Waitcmata 423. The cup was presented by Mr. H. Cadness. president of the Waitemata Club, in order to still further cement the fine community of interest which exist* between the four clubs across the harbour. Club Championships. A few more clubs have found their champions, but there are still several where it seems unlikely that the final will be reached by to-morrow. Mount Eden. —H. Bainbridge got throughout without a loss, defeating W. E, Vivian in the final. Carlton.—H. C. Clarke's victory over H. Jenkin, both being Dominion champions, again illustrates the great accession of strength that has come to Carlton during the last two or three years from Rockv Nook and other clubs. The winner was three times champion of the smaller club, following it lip by winning the champion of champions in 1925, after being runner-up to A. Parsons in 192:3. He removed to Carlton, and won the club championship two years ago, winning also the champion of champions-, arid as he won the Dominion singles the previous year he will doubtless be first favourite next week. The runner-up has been champion of Rocky Xook three times, and removed to Carlton this season. Ponsonby.—E. Jury defeated A. J. Letham in the final. The winner was club champion in 1923, and the loser was runner-up in 1927 and again in 1925. Grey Lynn. —There are still six left in. Remuera. —The semi-final and final were played on Monday afternoon. The former was a good game, Rev. H. Ryan defeating S. Ivissling by one point. The winner, was leading by 14 to G on the tenth head, but Ivissling recovered the lead by three points on the sixteenth, only to go down in the end. Ryan then met J. H. Mingins, but he seemed tired, and had lost a lot of his accuracy. In the middle of the game he drove several times unsuccessfully, anefhever recovered from the seven points thus lost. Mingins was champion of Epsom two years ago. Pukekohe. —The championship was played in sections, the winner being W. J. Short, who defeated W. E. J. Munro in the final, after the latter had played off the section tie with H. V. Gribble, the champion of 1927. The champion of champions tournament will commence next Tuesday. Personal. There will be general regret that Mr. A. B. Gladding, secretary of the Epsotn Bowling Club," is removing to Dunedin this week. However, what will be Auckland's loss will be Dunedin's gain, for he has proved himself'a very useful member of the bowling fraternity. Originally learning the game at the Hataitai Club, Wellington, he removed to Auckland, and joined Rocky Xook, where he was soon in office as treasurer. Two years ago he moved to Epsom, and joined the local club, taking office as secretary for the pres-'nt season. As a brother.of Mr. G. L. Gladding, secretary of the Auckland Centre, and a former member of the Dominion Council, his name will be quite sufficient introduction to the bowlers of Dunedin, so he will be assured of a warm welcome when lie gets there. / The many friends of Mr. A. W. Blanchard have been very pleased to see him well enough to watch some o'f the tournaments lately, and a few days ago he felt sufficiently recovered to play his first, game for two years.
