CITY OUTLETS.
PROPOSED NEW ROADS. NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN CONNECTIONS, . '* Proposals for a northern" and *a southern traffic outlet for the city were received from Miss Ella Basten at last night's meeting, of the Auckland Town Planning Association. The first scheme was for a roaii from Fanehawe Street along Nelson Street to Beresford Street, thence across the guljy to Hopetooxn Street, and along! Crummer Road to Great North Road. In favour of this scheme, the writer claimed that it would be a direct link between the waterfront and the main northern highway and that. the initial formation of the route, with the exception of the gully - filling, ie already in existence. ' . ■; To connect the new railway. station with the main southern" highway, tfte writer suggested a road from the foot of Parnell Rise, under the railway bridge, along the left hand side of the railway, through a tunnel beneath Parnell Road parallel with the present tunnel, along the back of Newmarket railway stations and under Remuera Road' to connect with the Great South Road; ■ : This new road would, Miss Basten claimed, obviate the dangerous bottleneck at Newmarket, and would transfer the burden of outward traffic from that area. No difficult grades would )-be encountered, and all the hillA at'present to be traversed to gain the Great . South Road would be cut out. - The proposals were referred to . the technical group for discussion. • ' '
