NEW GOVERNOR'S STAFF
CORINTHIC PASSENGERS. RELATIVES OF LORD BLEDISLOE. MILITARY CAREER OF SECRETARY. Arrivals in Auckland by the Corinthic yesterday were Major A. H. Bathurst, private and ■ military secretary to the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, and Mrs. Bathurst, and Sir John Hanham, one of his Excellency's aides-de-camp. Members, of his Excellency's household staff were also on the ship. v
Owing to unfavourable weather . being encountered, the Corinthic arrived in Auckland five days behind schedule, and thus little time has been left for Major Bathurst and Sir, John Hanhanx to finalise arrangements incidental to the
arrival at Wellington of Lord and Lady Bledisloe, who will reach New Zealand by the Rangitiki to-morrow.
Major Bathurst is Lord Bledisloe's younger brother,(while Sir John Hanham is the latterfs nephew. Major Bathurst liiis a fine military career, and in addition has been associated with civil, administrative and social work. Educated at Oxford, he joined the Royal Berkshire Regiment in 1894. After being aide-de-camp to the Governor of Barbados for some time, he went with his regiment to South Africa. He .was promoted to the rank of captain during the war in that country, and transferred to the Manchester Regiment. Later lie returned to his original regiment. At the close of the South African War he served as adjutant with the volunteers until 1905. For two years he was attached to the headquarters staff at Aldershot, and from 1908 to 1912 he was on the general staff of the Irish Command. H<j retired from the Army in February, 1914, as Captain Bathurst, but rejoined on the outbreak of the Great War. Serving on the staff in England' and France tie rose to the rank ,of major. Upon his second retirement from military service ■ on the completion of the war, Major Bathurst went into the Colonial Office, where he was personal private secretary to the Under-Secretary, Mr. Edward Wood, now Lord Irwin, Viceroy of Indyi. In recent , years he has devoted much of his time to social work in London. Keenly interested in botany and natiu-al history, Sir John Hanham is looking forward to his sojourn in New Zealand. Educated at Oxford, he served with the Grenadier Guards in trance during the Great War. Subsequently he was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple. About two years ago he took part in an Oxford University ecological expedition to Greenland.
