Mrs. M. Campbell, of Claude Road, Epsom, <*ave a small birthday afternoon tea at the J.C.L. tea rooms yesterday. Laro-e bowls of orcliid-toned cactus dahlias made an attractive table decoration. The hostess wore a navy blue floral satin, arid-white ballibuntal hat. Among those present were: Mesdames P. H. Fughes, M. Cossar, N. Kerr, E. F. Westbury, R. Airey, M. Walker and V. Kerr. . „

A "bring and buy" party held in the beautiful grounds of the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Harding, at Dargaville, was a great success,, and "the motor car fund of the Plunket Society will benefit by over £70 as the result. The extensive lawns and large, rooms of the "Aoroa" homestead made an ideal setting for the gathering. A display ot cut flowers from the gardens o Colonel Nutsford, of Mareretu, was much admired. During the day a number of competitions were lield, and resulted as follow: —Box of sweets, Mrs. John Dempsey; fancy bridge bag, Mrs. A. C. Ball; manicure set, Miss Lucy Williams; embroidered purse, Mrs. D. Boyes ; embroidered supper cloth, Mrs. H. Tonkin; cooked dinners, Mesdames J. Old (Mangawhare) and Olsen (Aoroa); picture, Mrs. Wallace (Ruawai); weight guessing (doll), Mr. S. Morrow (Auckland) ; china sandwich set, Mrs. Owen Williams; weight-guessing (cake), Miss Hansen; "500" card competitions, Mrs. W. R. Worslcy and Mr. J. D. Barrow; consolation prize, Miss J. An "At Home" was held by the Papatoetoe Croquet Club on Thursday. There was a large attendance members and visitors. The six lawns were in good order, giving good play and were fully occupied throughout the day. Three sessions of progressive croauiit were played and were won by Miss Wann and Mrs. Olgilvie (Otahuhu), Miss Washer (Onehunga) and Mrs. Patton (Howick), Mrs. Roberts (Howick) and Mrs. Parr (Onehunga). Target croquet was also played and was won by Mrs. Roberts (Howick), Mrs. R. McCullougb, and Mrs. J. Daisley, of the Papatoetoo Club. Bowling competitions arranged for ladies and gentlemen were won by Mesdames Boyce and Farrand (Papatoetoe), and Messrs Stevens (St. Helier's), and Netilingham (Papatoetoe). A variety stall under the balcony of the pavilion was under the charge of Mrs. W. T. S. Wilson, Mrs. W. Cutforth and Miss Hamilton. Morning and afternoon tea and lunch were provided. Trophies were presented by Mrs. Daisley, president of the club.

A surprise party, as a happy form of "farewell," was tendered to Mr. and Mrs. H. Bach, at their home in Bayswater, by the Ladies' and Men's Committees of the Takapuna-Bayswater Boating Club. A very enjoyable evening was spent in games, music, etc. A beautiful bouquet of pink carnations, and dahlias with maidenhair fern, was presented to Mrs. Bach by Mrs. Lidgard. Amongst those present were: Mrs. Inkster, Mrs. W. Cook, Mrs. R. Lidgard, Mr. and Mrs. J. Deacon, Mrs. J. Peters, Mrs. Williamson, Mrs. Gyde, Mrs. Burnett, Mr. and Mrs. Hoverd; the Misses Auriel Garland, Margaret Mclntyre, Winsome and Mavis Bach.

A dance was held in the Trades Hall, Hobson Street, on Tuesday night in honour of the coming of age dance of Miss May Saxon. Music was supplied by Hoffman's Commanders. In the Takanini Hall on March 13 a social was tendered by the residents of the district to Mr. and Mrs. Haugliey. Mr. Haugliey has retired after 43 years' service with the Education Board, the last seven years as head teacher, of Takanini School. Presentations were made, 011 behalf of the residents, to Mr. and Mrs. Haugliey. Entertaining musical items were rendered by Mr. Walker, Miss McLackie, Miss Duffin, Miss M. Brown, Mesdaines Peploe and Miller. School children under Miss Delaney gave songs and recitations.

A farewell party to Miss Barriball, who is leaving the Richmond Road school to be married, was given by Mrs. W. Kay, of Heme Bay, at the Lyceum Club, yestfferday afternoon. The table was artistically arranged in pink asters, and strands of asparagus fern. Mrs. Kay received her guests in a Java brown frock and beige toque. The guest of honour wore a navy blue printed satin, and large picture hat. Among those present were: —Mrs. E. Gavey, Mrs. Staples, Miss .Jamieson, Miss Claridge. Miss Campbell, Miss Solomon, Miss Steen, Miss Evans and Mrs. Cato.
