INDIAN ASSAULTED.
ARGUMENT OVER GANDHI. "WON'T WALK OVES. BRITISH" LABOURER IN TROUBLE. Following an argument about Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian leader, in a city boardinghouse last night, George David Cargill (35), a labourer, was arrested at midnight charged with assaulting Amar Chand, greengrocer, who was in Auckland on a visit from Te Puke. Cargill, who was defended by Mr. Alan Smyth at the Police Court this, morning, pleaded not guilty. Chand, a tall Indian, who appeared with a black eye and several face bruises, said he stayed at the Vincent Street boardinghouse last night with his brother, who was a boarder there. Just before midnight Cargill came in and made a remark about Gandhi causing trouble in India. Witness refused to argue with accused, who struck him as he was going upstairs. Mr. Smyth: You were talking a lot about Gandhi? —No. f Accused said Gandhi was no good?— Yes. Y'ou were supporting Gandhi ? —No. Constable Carson, who went to the house and arrested accused, said the Indian was bleeding badly from the face. Cargill explained that there had been an argument about Gandhi and that Chand rushed at him. He added that he then had to protect himself. Mr. Smyth said that the Indian was going upstairs when Cargill passed a remark about Gandhi. Chand took offence at this remark and struck accused. Mark Borieh, proprietor of the boardinghouse, called by counsel, said he heard accused say to Chand, "This is one of the Indians. Don't worry, these niggers won't walk over the British in India." The next that witness saw wu.= both men on the floor with the Indian on top of Cargill. They were kicking one another in the face. Accused did n3t give evidence. Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., said the marks on Chand's face were consistent with his story that he Lad been as- J saulted by Cargill. "I accept his evi- j dence —it "is the only evidence of the, assault.-" added the magistrate. He lined j Cargill £2.
