WHAT THE PAPER SAYS! — PEARCE — — PEARCE — — PEARCE — — PEARCE — — PEARCE — *The most outstanding performance of .the evening was that of Pearce, the world's champion, who succeeded in lowering his own one lap record of 20 4-5s to 20s, after one of the most exciting attempts seen on the Speedway. Riding a new " Peashooter" Harley-Davidson, which lie claims to be even faster than the machine on which he made his previous record, Pearce circled the track slowly, and when 100 yards from the starting post he "turned it on." The machine flashed past the judge's 'box and the crowd gasped as Pearce went into the .corner, his cycle lying over so that the handles were almost brushing the cinders as it skidded round the white line. One kick from his steel-capped left boot brought Pearce's motor erect again, and he "was down the back straight and into the bottom corner before the crowd had recovered from its astonishment. Another marvellous exhibition of scientific ibroadsiding brought Pearce successfully round the second bend, and the large audience gave him a rousing reception when it • was announced that he had covered a quarter of a mile in 20s, a speed of .45 miles an hour. Throughout the whole of his successful attempt it seemed that Pearce must surely fall, and the manner in which he controlled his machine as it skidded and 'bounced on its way round the track was very thrilling.
