RUGBY LEAGUE.
CLUBS GETTING BUSY. RECORD SEASON , EXPECTED. PONSONBY'S ANNUAL MEETING. Interest is simmering in Rugby League football circles and various clubs are holding their annual meetings and arranging for what is expected to be , another record season. In view of the tour of a New Zealand team in Australia it is expected that the standard of play will be maintained at a high level. It is already known that isome of the local senior teams will be strengthened and there will be a number of public surprises. Over sixty players attended the annual meeting of the Ponsonby United Club held at the Leys Institute, Mr, Nelson D. Culpan presiding and expressing surprise at the early enthusiasm shown. The annual report congratulated the senior team upon annexing the championship. The results were achieved through the good work of Mr. Sam Lowry (coach) and Frank Delgrosso (captain). The club extended its congratulations to the Marist Club on its fine performance in winning the Stormont Shield and the champion of champion honours. The Ponsonby first juniors were complimented upon their consistency and, together with the third B team, who were defeated for the- championship by a point, were considered to number amongst the club's many fine junior players. The coaches responsible were respectively Messrs. G. Raynes and P. C. White. The club fully anticipated considerable success in the forthcoming season.
Healthy Finances. The financial position was reported to be very sound. The accumulated funds showed an increase of just under £20 for the year, the total of assets exceeding liabilities by £400. This included building fund and general account. Votes of thanks were accorded to players, supporters and donors of trophies. Medals were presented to A. Payne, the most consistent forward. L. Riley, most consistent back, and to C. Moore, as the most versatile player. J. Norman received a trophy as the most consistent fourth grade player. Officers were elected as follows: — Patron, Mr. Paul Sandford; president, Mr. N. D. Culpan; secretary, Mr. J, Taylor; treasurer, Mr. E. C. McEwan; senior delegate, Mr. R. Short; junior delegate, Mr. A. Black; club captain, Mr. A. Donovan; selector, Mr. W. Walsh; committee, Messrs. R. Cole, C. Turner, T. Boswell, W. Henderson, C. Russell, R. H. Wood, and auditors, secretary and treasurer of the A.R.L. Forty vice-presidents were re-elected. Reference was made to the good work of the treasurer, Mr. E. C. McEwan, for the past eleven years. It was decided to appoint him a life member of the club, which has only conferred such an honour on seven occasions. Medallions are to be presented. The chairman welcomed a number of A.R.L. officials, who desired to know whether the club sought any information on any points. There boinjor no questions, Mr. Ivan Culpan said Ponsonby appeared to be a very contented club.
