ANNUAL MEETING OPENS.

EAGER ROSE'S MEMORIAL

SECOND ÜBG TO LEITRIM.

BELLS OF SHANDON BEST

YOUNGSTER

MITHRA LEFT AT POST IN LAST.

The opening of the Te Aroha Jockey Club's meeting at Herriesville on Satur- ; day was patronised by a large crowd, many making the trip from Auckland. ■ The Herries Memorial was won by the j Ellerslie-trained mare Eager Rose, with 'the favourite, Taneriri,' second and In

. the Shade third. The second "leg" of I the double went to Leitrim, who just

[lasted long enough to beat Lucy.Rose. I Bells of Sliandon was responsible for a 1 good performance in winning the Juve- | nile Handicap. The amount handled at ! the totalisator during the afternoon was £31,044 against £29,518 on the opening i day last year, an increase of £1526.

Favourite Has Every Chance. The credit of; saddling up the first winner went to the, Te Rapa trainer P. Brady, who'produced Star Comet in.fine order. The son of Day Comet was a strong second fancy and he scored very nicely, after tailing the field along in the early part. Archeen, the favourite, was out in the lead with Glenstar most of the way, but was being kicked along before the home turn and his chance was gone at the entrance to the straight, where Glenstar left him. Glenstar looked like a winner when racing for the last fence, but Star Comet was too good...ami responded,.in; fine style' to. Brady's, riding and.won rather well by a : couple of"lengths. Wako King niade no showing, and third place was filled by Grand Arch, who was paying a solid price oh the machine.

Backers Again Astray. Chromadyne, one of K. Hannon's team, and who had shown good form at the Takapuna meeting, was selected as the best of the bunch in the Waitoa Handicap, but after showing a lot of speed at one stage he stopped badly in the straight and finished well back. He was actually the first to turn for home, but he was then done with. The winner turned up in Aggressive, a four-year-old daughter of Kilbroney and Vicereine. She is owned by Mr. T. Impey and trained by S. Hodge at Takanini. In the race Aggressive was a good way back in the early part, and made a forward move across the top, but had still considerable leeway to make up in the straight. However, McTavish kicked her along and at the finish she got up to win by nearly a length from Biddy's Comet. The latter looked a winner, when Chromadyne compounded at the straight, but though she hung on well, Aggressive finished the better. Sir Mond, who was well placed throughout, was a fair third. Te • Apurangfrwas..a.,,!quiet- he went a ; useftil pace,'" being 'just behind: the • place-getters at the end. Royal Visitor, one of A. Cook's team, carried solid support, but the son of Lucullus never got out of the ruck and at no stage was he in the firing line.

Bells of Shandon's Win. When Bells of Shandon was almost at the tail of the field in the first couple of furlongs of the Juvenile Handicap, his many backers could not have been confident about cashing their, tickets, but the son of Lord Quex proved he was the goods and at the finish won easily by a couple of lengths. Goldfinch moved him up i. little coming across ■ the top stretch, but he was still fiftli when the home turn was reached. JFrotn there he put in great work and ha'd the,race won, some lengths from the judge. Bells of. 'Shandon is owned by Mr. S. P.-Gleeson, and is trained/by Pi E. Pope at Takanini. The success of Mr. Gleeson's colours was very popular. Chief Joy, a gelding by Chief Ruler in J. T. Jamie- . son's team finished second, after being in .the picture all the way. The, secondfavourite, Brilliant' Lady, had every; chance, but could not do better than finish third. - -Wild -Time .was freely supported, but "the Catmint filly ■ began very slowly, and in addition when moving up at the; straight entrance--ran-out wide.

Eager Rose Wins Wei!.. That smart galloper Eager Rose isnever greatly i fancied by backers, but that fact does not stop her from getting the money, "arid -shei. befit"f'at; good 'field in the Herries* Memorial. 'She was only fifth selection, and among 'those she downed were/, the;.'" consistent Tanerin and the Wanganui Cup winner, In the Shade. Royal Doulton, winner of the A.R.C. Sunimer.'Cup;.-and:a,'big handicap at the January meeting at Takapuna, was also among the.field, but she ..was not greatly in demand.. Tanenri was. a solid favourite and no" excuses can be offered for. his. being beaten by Eager Rose. The favourite was always jn a winning position, and when he settled High Pitch,,.wha.had been, making play in front to the ~ home - turn, Taneriri's backers felt for their tickets. However, Eacer Rose,-whq had always .been in the firel four, and-on whom Wiggins was waiting for the final run, settled Taneriri without much effort in the straight, \. Kemp's mare winning well. In the Shade, after tailing the field along and looking in a hopeless' position at, the turn, came on strongly to get third only three-quarters of. a length behind Taneriri. ■' Prince" Val had every, chance, but did not finish at all well, and the eame applies to Maori Boy. Sir Russell went a fair race but found the journey a, bit far for him. Royal Doulton and King Emerald were\ always at. or near the tail of the field"and never lookedlike getting in the money. The winner, Eager Rose, wins in her turn, and always pays a good price.

A Handy Dividend. Those who were fortunate enough to have a ticket on Tetrachate in the Shaftesbury Hack were on the best ot terms with the world in general, as they ~ould afford to have a pound on all the remaining races at the meeting and, it all lost, would still have some left. When Volimond was .withdrawn in favour of Honiton hackers had no. hesitation in making Honiton favourite, and as a second pick they went for Valstreet. Neither ever looked like eavmg the monev although Honiton at the finish wft « fourth and made up some ground from tlw home turn. The pace was set bv Awamutu, but, as usual, he did not run the race right out, and once in? the BtraigW he began to stop. Tetrachate ridden by an apprentice, Bentley, and Ibtrtine at any old price, was. sixth in tie early stages and fifth into the

straight, but ; then put In some telling strides which landed him a winner by a length and a half from Currajong, who was fourth early and always in a good position. Master Latour showed pace by following Awamutu most of the way, but did not finish on when required to give a little extra. Patere, after being third for a few furlong?, died away and wag ninth at the judge.

Leitrim Just Gets There. Though Leitrim, the favourite' in the big sprint, won all right, .the son of Valkyrian had to be hunted along by Gray to secure the verdict by a neck from Lucy Rose, who put in some telling work in the straight and was only a neck away at the post. Leitrim began quickly, as usual, but Town Bird went past the favourite and led into V.:q straight. As on other occasions,

Town Bird collapsed as soon as the winning post was sighted and Leitrim appeared to have things all his own way. Then. Lucy Rose, not too well placed early, came along and finished strongly, and Leitrim was kicked right up to his work.; Value also did well to get third, as she was standing the leaders up a good start at one stage. Envoy, the second favourite, had every chance. He was lying third early, but could only finish fourth. ■ British King, after being out of the barrier with Leitrim, did not keep his place. Takutama was always well back and was seventh passing the judge.

A Great Finish. , Though the favourites were completely bowled over in the Champion Hack Cup the finish was a real beauty, and Spring Abbey, Te Hoia, and Helium, all at good prices, went past the judge almost in line, a dead-heat being declared between Spring Abbey and Te Hoia, with Helium a heck away; Both Spring Abbey and Te Hoja were in good positions all through, but Helium, after being well back for half-the journey, made a good run and was handy at. the home turn. Haviland was the favourite, and he had :every chance, being'taken to the front at barrier rise, and he was still there at the straight entrance, but that was the end of him,, and when challenges came out he gave in and finished well back. Thurnus was running on at the end after being unsighted till well in the straight. Red Day put in a fast run approaching' the-straight, ana did well to finish fifth!.' Archieval did not race up to expectations, and Grand Tea, web supported, was never out. of the ruck.

Left At the Post. Backers of Mithra, a good second favourite in the Hot Springs Handicap, did .not. get'a run for their coin. When the lever was pulled Mithra got caught in the tapes and she took no part in the contest. -It was not a very interesting race as th,e favourite, Prince of Orange, was early leader, and though Partial Eclipse headed him before reaching the straight, the favourite came on again when .asked by- Goldfinch and won by three-quarters of a length from Wenday, who,vmade up a fair amount bfUeeway over"the' last furlong.. Le Qhoueas once more, disappointed, and-could only get Z '-.;:r.i;
