DEVONPORT CLUB'S REGATTA. SLOW SAILING IN LIGHT AIRS. MANY BOATS BETIRE. The Devonport Yactit Club held the annual regatta on Saturday, all events starting and finishing off the Victoria wharf. Like the previous Saturday, the racing was spoiled by the very light airs which came first from the North and later went all round the compass, bur there was never any weight in the breeze. The officers of the day wisely decided to shorten all, courses. The bigger boats had a mark cut out, and the smaller classes were stopped on the first round. This allowed them to finish in a reasonable time, but a number of boats retired, being unable to complete the shortened course before sunset. There was quite a good muster of firstclass yachts, the entries and handicaps beingAriki, lorangi, Nga Toa, Thelma, scr.; Prize, 7m; Ida, Kotiri, llim : Windward, lira ; Rangi, 20m ; Scout, -.m. The course was from starting line off \ictona wharf, round Bastion beacon, round Duder .Spit buoy, round red light buoy, round Bastion, round mark off Stanley Point to starting line. The mark below Rangitoto wharf was cut out. The Prize won the Duder Cup and miniature presented by Mr. John Under. From a very good start in a light northerly breeze, "Windward -was first ever the line closely followed by lorangi, t'rize % Kotiri. Scout, Thelma, Rangi and Nga Toa. _ It was a lead across to tne Basclon and fairly good time was made on this leg of the course, but it was a slow job beating out the channel to the Duder Spit buoy. Windward, well suited by the light weather, maintained her lead to Bastion, but lorangi, Nga Toa and Thelma passed her on. the beat out. At the Bastion mark for the second time, lorangi had a lead of IDA minutes from Nga toa, with Thelma nearly 20 minutes behind Nga Toa. Coming up the harbour for the mark off Stanley Point lorangi, well over on the southern shore, was be- | calmed above the eastern tide dedeetor. Nga Toa and Windward got the first of a I Southerly out or Hobson Bay shortly after six o'clock and quickly overhauled her. lorangi got going again before the others caught her and finished first, but Windward was nearly 3 minutes inside her time and won easily. Prize sailed up 1 lie northern shore, cutting quite a lot off the distance sailed by the other three and finished fourth. Thelma, Kotiri, Rangi, Ariki and Scout withdrew. The finish was timed: lorangi. till 17m ss; Nga Toa, Oh 20m 355; Windward, 6h 2Sm 30s; Prize Gh 40m Cs . Result: Windward 1, lorangi 2, Nga Toa 3. Won by 2m 355.
