Inquiries have been made by the head office of the Railways Depacttiuni into the dismissal of -0 emergency carpenters from' the Otahuhu workshops. These men were engaged on an hour-to-hour basis, and departmental officers conlinii I the statement that the main reason tor ! temporarily ending their employment was the non-arrival of tor observation carriages which bad been ordered from abroad. This is not up to contract, but is now on the water, anil when it arrives there will be more work available. _ , In respect to the equipment wlhcji can be manufactured by tae Kailwaj Department., efforts are being made to hasten its completion, and overtime ia being noised j for the purpose.
