MINERS' HOURS.
TORY AMENDMENT REJECTED. ) ' • LONDON, February 7. The House of Commons, in committee on the Coal Mines Bill, discussed the reduction of the working day to 7i hour; . The debate primarily ranged round an amendment moved by Sir Robert Home (Con.j. Glasgow) 'to substitute for a rigid 7* a total of 90 hours spread over a fortnight. This, coupled with an early start on Saturday, would - enable the miners to work the full shift, and yet be at liberty on Saturdays for football, dog racing and other sports. Sir Robert argued that compressing the hours into eleven days in a fortnight would be a great advantage to the industry, whereas 71- hours a day would cost an additional 1/6 a ton. Mr. Vernon Hartshorn and other Labour members opposed the amendment, which was rejected"by 292 votes to 197.
