WHY THE CHURCHWARDEN BEAMED.
One of the strangest duties which churchwardens were expected to undertake was that of seeing that the publichouses were closed during church hours. There was one who rode every Sunday morning to church- After stabling his pony in the vicars yard he would accompany the parson to church. At the commencement of the Psalms he would rise from his seat and leave with the object of perambulating the village to see that the innkeepers were duly observing the Sabbath. He returned • to the church about the middle of the sermon. Observant members of the congregation frequently noticed his rubicund face beamin<r affablv, and they concluded that his inspection had resulted- quite satisfactory to himself. ---
