THE FLOWER GARDEN.
Sow Pansy seed now. Get the very best stock. Cut back and trim up old Pansies and Violas, afterwards giving a topdressing of leafsoil or old cow manure. This is a good time to lift and divide the rhizomateous Iris. Most of the Irises require excessive amounts of lime. Caterpillars are putting in an appearance. Spray with arsenate of
lead one ounce to gallon of water. Dahlias, Chrysanthemums, Asters and Zinnias can be sprayed. Keep down weeds •by hoeing. Where the weed seeds have come from
it is difficult to say. To kill one lot of weeds seems like making
room for another batch'. Keep spent blooms closely picked off Sweet Peas, etc. In most cases
you can buy for a few pence better seed than you can save. Cut off the dead bloonis of Hydrangeas. Cuttings taken now root readily. , , Layer Border Carnations. The weather so far has been ideal for this work. Sow seeds of Primulas, "Cinerarias, Carnations, and most perennials , and biennials. / Clear away spent plants, and dig over the ground. Prepare beds for Anemone and Ranunculi planting. Chrysanthemums must be attended to daily. Tying, disbudding, spraying, need close attention. Dahlias should have the blooms cut off as soon as the outer petals begin to fade. Keep the plants securely tied.
