Mr T Downing and his wife and three children, aged 16, 9 and 5 years, had a narrow escape. from drowning in the Manawatu River yesterday afternoon. TheV were rowing in a'flat-bottomed boat when one -of the oars broke. Hie boat' drifted ■on■ to a submerged snag and filled rapidly the occupants scrambling on to a snag and being finally rescued by means of a rope and rait.
