MAORI STOLE TOOLS.
CASE AT WHANGAREI COURT.
POLICE REPORT FAVOURABLE,
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WHANGAREI, this day
While building an aeroplane in Vinery Lane Messrs. Eoy Smith and 11. A. Leckie left their tools on the job, to find next morning that they had disappeared.
A police search revealed the culprit to be a Maori named Walter Smith, who was charged with the offence at the Court this morning. Senior Sergeant O'Grady said the accused had thrice previously been convicted of theft. His wife was in delicate health and he had stolen the tools to provide for the family. Some of the tools had been recovered, but a plane and hacksaw were still in the possession of a second-hand dealer.
On account of the special circumstances, the police mads- a favourable report for probation, and the magistrate adjourned the case for six months, ordering Smith to make restitution to the amount of 37/0.
