HABITUAL OFFENDER.
CROMWELL TO GAOL. STOLE BUG FROM MOTOR CAR. Given a chance last week when he appeared in the Police Court 011 a charge of being an idle and disorderly person, James Cromwell, a butcher, aged 54, abused the leniency extended to him. He immediately stole a rug valued at SO/. Cromwell admitted to Mr.• W. R. McKcan, S.M., this morning that he had stolen the rug from a car which was parked in Princes Street. He had sold the article to a dealer for a few shillings. , "He has a long list," said Chief Detective Hammond. "He has 50 previous convictions. Cromwell is an habitual offender, he drinks methylated spirits, and lie will steal to flie cud of his days. He will do anything to get drink." To this description of him Cromwell replied that he did not steal the rug— he merely pawned it. Besides, he had not been drinking methylated spirits, he said —only beer. "He was here the other day and was given a good warning," said Mr. Hammond. "He has done no good and is not likely to." Captain Holmes, of the Salvation Army, said that Cromwell had beer, given dozens of chances. He was afraid "that no more could be done for the man. fhree months iu Mount Eden was the , 6en tence of the magistrate.
